Consultation with Laurel Parnell, Ph.D.
I have been providing individual and group consultation to EMDR therapists since 1995. As an EMDRIA-approved consultant, the consultation hours that EMDR-trained therapists receive with me post-training count towards their certification in EMDR. In order to be certified, licensed therapists who complete an EMDRIA-approved training must receive twenty hours of consultation from an EMDRIA-approved consultant. The hours can include ten hours of group and ten of individual consultation, or twenty hours of individual consultation.
Individual Consultation
I meet with consultees in my office in San Rafael, California, or speak with them on the phone. I am happy that I can provide consultation to therapists living in many areas of the United States and am open to working by telephone with those living abroad. In the consultation I answer questions, give advice, and help clarify areas of difficulty and confusion. I ask that consultees prepare cases to present including client history, case conceptualization and session process notes as well as any questions they might have. I have found that this preparation helps consultees clarify their thinking and enables me to understand how best to advise them.
Group Consultation
I consult with small groups of EMDR therapists in my San Rafael, California office and also by telephone. Some of the groups have been meeting for several years. The groups provide therapists with the opportunity to ask questions, get help with challenging cases, clarify protocols and procedures, assist with case conceptualization, resource development and installation, targeting and interweaves. The groups meet for two hours once a month, with a break over the summer. The groups are an important support and resource to EMDR therapists following the training as well as over time as their skills and confidence develop.
